The Empty Pot
Long ago in China, there was a boy named Ping who had a "green thumb." Everything he planted—from flowers to trees—bloomed beautifully. The Emperor, who also loved flowers, was getting old and needed to choose a successor.
The Emperor gave a seed to every child in the kingdom. "Whoever can show me their best growth in a year's time shall succeed me to the throne," he declared.
Ping was thrilled. He planted his seed in a beautiful pot with rich soil. He watered it every day. But after a month, nothing happened. Two months, then three—still no sprout. He moved it to a larger pot, changed the soil, and even talked to the seed, but the pot remained stubbornly empty.
A year passed. All the children in the kingdom headed to the palace with magnificent, colorful flowers. Ping was heartbroken. He looked at his empty pot and felt like a failure. His father looked at him and said, "You did your best. Bring your best to the Emperor, even if it is just an empty pot."
At the palace, the Emperor walked past rows of stunning blossoms, looking strangely sad. Finally, he reached Ping. "Why is your pot empty?" the Emperor asked sternly.
Ping teared up. "I planted the seed you gave me and I cared for it every day, but it would not grow. I have brought you my empty pot because it is the best I could do."
The Emperor smiled. "I have found my successor!" he cried. "The seeds I gave you were all cooked. It was impossible for them to grow. I do not know where the rest of you found these flowers, but this boy is the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me the truth."
